  1. I've gotten two Tusk strat nuts and I don't remember even having to adjust the nut slots, so you may get lucky and not have to touch 'em. As far as fitting the nut slot, take your time and do 5,6 firm swipes with 200 grit sandpaper and then try it in. And if you overdo it, just trim a layer or two of aluminum foil to snug it up.

Have you ever had issues fretting a note closer to the nut? Have you ever noticed that your string doesn’t quite fit in the nut, and tends to cradle itself on top of the nut slot?

If you have either of these issues, chances are your nut action height is off, and this can lead to your strings coming out of tune. How does this happen?

Simple. When you fret a string that is too high off of the fret, you are pulling the string down which in turn can cause the string to slip through the tuning peg and drop in tuning.

It is a chain reaction, and one that is often overlooked by many guitarists who blame these problems on either the tuners themselves, or the bridge action height, both of which are close to the source but not quite the exact problem.

In this article, we are going to go over proper guitar nut action height so that you can adjust your guitar correctly without causing damage.

If Unsure, Engage a Professional to Do the Job

If you have any reservations about performing this adjustment yourself, it is best that you save up a little bit of cash on the side and get the job done professionally, as a bad case of nerves can cause you to make a mistake.

And while guitar nuts are not expensive, most don’t come filed, which means you will have to go and get your nut filed out which is quite a bit more expensive than nut action height adjustments.

Steps to Get the Nut Height Filed Correctly

In order to make adjustments to the action of the nut, you will need a set of files, one that coincides with the width of each string rut in the nut, a feeler gauge, a tuner, and some time and a whole lot of patience.

The first thing you want to do is take your feeler gauge and check the distance between the string of the first fret and the fret itself. If your string reaches the feeler gauge (.018 inches is the best gauge to use for optimal nut action height) you are all set. If it doesn’t, you need to file down the nut.

Start by loosening the string, not taking it off. Select a file that best fits the fret, and file the fret down a small amount. Then tune back up, and use the feeler gauge to check the distance once more.

Repeat until you reach the proper height, and then move on to the next string.

That’s it.

It may seem easy, and it is, but only if you take your time and allow yourself to relax and approach the project at a reasonable pace. If you rush, you may wind up filing too far down, then you’ll end up with a nut too deep and you won’t be able to use it.

In the end, it is all up to you. Make your adjustments, and if you feel a bit nervous, bring your guitar to a professional. Good luck, and be careful; your guitar is only as good as you treat it.

The real e1 to E6 string spread can be controlled not only through nut width, but also by slot spread in the nut. For example, 44.5 mm wide nut can have e1 to E6 distance between 35 and 37.5 mm.

Neck Heel Width and Mounting

Most guitar parts manufacturer adopted Fender’s® neck heel and neck pocket dimensions:

  • 56 mm (2-3/16') - Width
  • 76 mm (3') - Length
  • 16 mm (5/8') - Pocket Depth

These dimensions are not a standard. Only careful measurement ensures that your parts will be compatible.

Strat necks have a rounded base to their heel and Tele necks have a squared-off base to their heel, which makes it difficult to interchange the two types of necks across various bodies.

Standard Fender heel mounting is done with 4-Bolt Holes - 1/8' (3mm) diameter (spread of 2' x 1-1/2').

Smaller radius means a more rounded shape.

Guitar Bodies

The sound of electric guitar depends mainly on the vibration behavior of the string itself and the reproduction characteristics of the pickup. The vibration behavior of the string depends (very little) on wood. The body itself is very thick compared to the neck, that is why the body wood type and form have very limited influence on the sound of electric guitar.

    Larger ratio (1:18 > 1:14) allows finer adjustments.

Bridges

Guitar bridge has large influence on playability (mainly through string spacing). Wider string spacing is better for finger-picking style, narrow spacing gives easier control when playing leads with distorted tone. ABM - indicates that Bell Brass and Steel shape the guitar sound with character, while Aluminum acts largely neutral in the transfer of tone.

Classic humbuckers are asymmetrical. They are internally wired in series (i.e. serial - brings more power) in opposite phase (less noise). Scale Length

A guitar’s scale length is length of string between the nut and the bridge.

Scale has a relatively low impact on sound and playability of the guitar. (Compared with other parameters such as strings or pickups).

Longer scale length sound and playability characteristics:

  • transparent sound with well-defined basses and heights
  • larger finger spread
  • higher string tension at constant gauge

Shorter scale length sound characteristics:
