Cass Lake Walleye Slot Limit

Posted on by admin

Cass has no slot limit so you can pull walleyes from the deep and not have to worry about releasing them and having them die because of the pressure change. Because there is no slot limit you might think the walleyes should come easy, but that wasn’t my experience in the two days prior to going out with Chad. However, natural reproduction plays a major role in maintaining a healthy walleye population in this lake. Both the number and average size of northern pike in Little Boy Lake is good; sampled fish ranged from 14 to 31 inches and had an average length of 23 inches. There is a 24 to 36-inch protected slot limit regulation in effect on this lake.

  1. Birdseye Lake (Itasca County): Walleye 17 to 26 inches must be released with one fish longer than 26 inches allowed in a possession limit of six; intended to increase abundance of spawning-age.
  2. Walleye and Sauger Lake of the Woods (May 11, 2019 – April 14, 2020) The Walleye/Sauger aggregate limit is six (no more than four can be Walleye). Walleye from 19.5 through 28 inches must be immediately released. Only one Walleye over 28 inches total length may be possessed. There are many different habits of the Walleye on Lake of the Woods.

Fisheries

We will provide information on these Fisheries pages dealing with the fishing issues on our lakes (see the menu bars to the left under Fisheries). We will provide statistical information about recent lake fishery netting surveys. We have information on the Walker Area Walleye Coalition and other fishing information.

We hope you find these pages enlightening. Let us know what other information you would like to see here! !

DNR Lake Management Plans

Our Fisheries Committee meets with the Minnesota DNR, Walker Area Office, at least annually to discuss the DNR Fisheries Management Plans for each of our lakes. The Minnesota DNR creates plans to help manage the fisheries on each lake. The plans discuss a number of items including results of lake surveys, netting information, long range goals, operational plans and many other items.

We meet with the DNR in December and/or FebruaryMarch timeframes to discuss the fishery management plans for our four lakes. We work together with the DNR to make changes to the plans and discuss stocking and netting recommendations. We continue to be actively involved in the Walker Area Walleye Coalition to try to ensure the future of the walleye fishery in our lakes by participating with them in discussions with the DNR about these plans.
